TOPIC: THE ARK OF COVENANT

The image on this post is a pictorial representation of the Ark of Covenant as recorded in the Bible. The Ark was built with precision, and every detail was observed as instructed by God in Exodus 25. While you take time to read that chapter, we shall focus on the content of the Ark as recounted in the book of Hebrews 9:4-5, "which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered Ark of the Covenant. This Ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.

Above the Ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now."

After reading the two scriptures, two things stood out, which shall be the subject of discussion: the law and mercy. Inside the Ark contained the laws, which were very rigid, and men were punished, even to death, by it when broken. No one was free from the law, not even the priest; that's how severe it was. But in all that, God's character was still evident, that character is mercy. After further readings with understanding, I can say that the content of the Ark wasn't really important as the lid (cover) of the Ark. The lid was called the SEAT OF MERCY. This shows how intentional God is in redeeming His people; it symbolizes an unending love. Now we understand why the psalmist would always say, "Your mercies endure forever."

Inside the Ark was strict, rigorous, rigid, and substantive law, but it was covered by and with mercy. The law wasn't seen (because it was inside the Ark), but mercy was made open (because it was the lid or cover). This means, even if the law is there, the window of mercy is still open (Exodus 25:21).

God said this to Moses in Exodus 25:22 (NLT), "I will meet with you there and talk to you from above the atonement cover between the gold cherubim that hover over the Ark of the Covenant. From there I will give you my commands for the people of Israel."

This very statement assures us of God's love and a fatherly concern. What God actually said was that He's aware of the laws, but He will prefer to communicate through mercy, not the law. In other words, even if the law is potent, there is still access to mercy. Further exposure of the Ark shows that mercy is extremely expensive, that even the richest is not rich enough to pay for it, and God had to pay for it Himself. Every atonement for mercy was done by blood, which couldn't last, so God decided to offer a supreme sacrifice that would last for all time - Hebrews 9:12, "He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption."

The understanding of this teaching in context alone is liberty, freedom, and a clear nullification of condemnation, as recorded in Romans 8:1, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

People of God, mercy is always available, even under the most strict conditions. God loves you so much that even the law can't stop it. Repent from your sins, learn from your mistakes, and ask God for mercy, which is available for us all. Take off your eyes from the law and fix them on God's mercy.

Galatians 5:1, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

The Ark of the Covenant was a type and representation of Jesus. The Ark is long gone, not invoked, and Jesus has taken the mercy seat to mediate for us - Romans 8:34, "Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ who died, yea rather, who is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us."

Some denominations today still have the Ark of the Covenant on the podium. A few pastors still ask members to run and hug the Ark of the Covenant for God's mercy. That is blown idolatry because the Ark has since been replaced by Jesus Christ. It's either we're going to worship and fix our eyes on Christ or the Ark; we can't worship both. Every content and demands of the Ark, Christ has fulfilled, and that is final.

Let's take to our advantage the mercies of God, for indeed, His mercy endures forever.
